December is Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience Month

Friday, January 4, 2013

President Obama recently declared December to be Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience month. The proclamation encouraged greater commitment and training in order to enhance national security through the safety and resilience of our infrastructure and communities.

Hurricane Sandy served as a stark reminder of the potential impact of all-hazards to public health and safety as well as economic vitality. Our dependence on critical infrastructure and the interdependencies between critical infrastructure, particularly those responsible for supporting life sustaining activities, was on full display during the tragedy.

Resilience and modernization are vital to sustaining and enhancing critical infrastructure, and we all have a role to play in protection and resilience efforts.

To advance those efforts, DHS is committed "to engage and activate partnerships [across all levels of government], to close gaps in our protection programs, to collaborate with private sector stakeholders, including critical infrastructure owners and operators, and to expand and reinforce critical infrastructure protection and resilience."
